How do I set up an Amharic keyboard on my phone and laptop?

Asked by haile

I want to type in Amharic on both my Android phone and laptop browser. How do I install and activate an Amharic keyboard on Android, and how do I enable Amharic typing in Chrome on a desktop or laptop? Short, practical, and exactly what someone in the diaspora would search for, thanks!

Here's how to set up Amharic typing on both your phone and laptop:

On Android:

The easiest method that works across most Android phones:

  • Open any text field to bring up your keyboard (Gboard).
  • Long press a key on the keyboard to access language settings.
  • Add Amharic (Ethiopia) directly from there.
  • Once added, switch between English and Amharic by tapping the globe icon or the language switcher in the keyboard toolbar.

If the long press method doesn't work, try this path:

  • Open SettingsSystemLanguages & input (or Keyboard & input methods, depending on your Android version).
  • Tap Virtual keyboard or On-screen keyboard.
  • Select your keyboard app (e.g. Gboard, Samsung Keyboard). Tap Languages.
  • Search for and select Amharic. You may see it as "Amharic (Ethiopia)" or similar.
  • Once added, switch to the Amharic keyboard by holding the space bar or tapping the globe icon.

Note for Xiaomi/MIUI users: The standard Settings path may loop back without offering an "Add language" option. The long press method above bypasses this reliably.

If Amharic still doesn't appear: Search the Play Store for "Amharic keyboard" — well-rated options include Amharic Keyboard Ethiopia by AfanduApps (4.9 stars, 500K+ downloads) and Agerigna Amharic Keyboard (1M+ downloads). Install one and activate it via your keyboard switcher.

On laptop/desktop (Chrome):

  • Install the Google Input Tools extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  • Open the extension options and add Amharic. There are three input modes:
    • Transliteration — type phonetically in English and it converts automatically (e.g. "selam" → "ሰላም"). Recommended for most users.
    • ግዕዝ — standard Ethiopic keyboard layout.
    • Handwriting — draw characters with your mouse or trackpad.
  • Switch to Amharic anytime via the Google Input Tools icon in your Chrome toolbar.

On Windows (system-wide): Go to SettingsTime & LanguageLanguage. Click Add a language, search for Amharic, and install it. Use Windows + Space to switch between keyboard languages across all apps.

On Mac (system-wide): Go to System Preferences (or System Settings) → KeyboardInput Sources. Click +, select Amharic, and add it. Switch via the input menu in the menu bar.

Tip: Many diaspora community members prefer the transliteration option in Google Input Tools as it doesn't require learning the Ethiopic keyboard layout — you simply type the sounds in English letters.

Steps may vary slightly depending on your device, OS version, and keyboard app. If you hit a snag, the Play Store Amharic keyboard apps are a reliable fallback on Android.
