Plants have a hidden "edit button" that marks which genes are on-stage versus backstage; tweak those marks, and you reshape how the plant grows without changing the script itself.

This means epigenetic tuning — not DNA mutation — can control plant development and flowering, which could accelerate breeding programs for crops that thrive under climate stress.
